Buenos Aires has a very intense cultural life, with constant openings in its three theater circuits: official, commercial and independent theater.

The most important official theaters are Colón Theater, Complejo Teatral General San Martín and Nacional Cervantes Theater. In these venues there are classic plays as well as innovative versions of universal theater. The Colón Theater is one of the world’s major opera houses.

The commercial theater circuit is based in Corrientes Avenue, where you can enjoy musicals, tango shows and local versions of plays from all around the world.

The independent theater circuit or “off theater” takes place in neighborhoods like Abasto, Palermo and San Telmo. There, the venues are smaller and there are low budget productions, and the public is mainly young.
